Basic Purpose of Job:
Responsible for the inspection, repair and maintenance of the engine and mechanical components of diesel electric locomotives. Physical duties involve occasionally climbing and maintaining balance on locomotive steps and ladders to gain access to the locomotive roof; maintaining balance when occasionally walking on catwalks, running boards, uneven terrain, ballast, and roofs while making repairs; stepping around objects and equipment on the floor; performing work while occasionally bending and stooping, and being in awkward postural positions; performing occasional overhead work for short periods of time; lift/carry and push/pull objects weighing 25 lbs. (frequently), and up to 86 lbs (rarely); and remaining standing or sitting for more than one-half of every work day with the opportunity to periodically to change position for comfort.

Communicate technical information, job briefing information, job procedure recommendations, and other work-related information with others through writing, in-person interaction, telephone, radio, and intercom.

Read, interpret, understand, and find (if necessary) written or electronic information, including information from diagrams, schematics, blueprints, graphs, and charts, and input information as needed into a computer.
|
Detect and interpret visual color signals and displays at near and far distances; identify alterations of objects (size, shape, temperature); detect unusual sounds and smells during inspections and tests (leaks in air systems); use depth perception to judge speed and distance of locomotives being moved on service area, and listen to detect warning signals.

| Required Education, Training, Experience or Skills: |
|
|
Applicants must be able and willing to understand and apply safety rules, practice safe work habits, identify safety risks, and avoid potentially risky behaviors and situations.
|
Applicants must have the ability to perform basic arithmetic operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and conversion of fractions into decimals and decimals into fractions to solve practical problems. In addition, applicants must be able to extract relevant information from tables, charts, graphs, and text.

|
Applicants must have the ability to use both high precision (for example, calipers, electronic scales) and low precision (for example, tape measures, hand levels) instruments to get accurate measurements.
|
Applicants must have the ability to effectively and accurately understand, interpret, reference, evaluate, organize, and record non-technical and technical information.
|
Applicants must have the ability to read and interpret blueprints and schematic drawings of mechanical, electrical, pneumatic and hydraulic systems, wiring diagrams, flow diagrams, location circuit plans and/or other types of technical drawings.
|

| Work Conditions: |
|
Must wear personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, safety boots, hard hats, and hearing protection where the company requires. In addition, they must become respirator certified. They will be working:
- Indoors in a shop environment, and frequently outdoors, regardless of weather conditions.
- At heights of 20 feet or more above the ground.
- With, on, and around moving or rotating heavy equipment.
- In confined spaces.
- Forty-hour workweeks that may include variable shifts with overtime, weekends, and holidays.
