Basic Purpose of Job:

Union Pacific is seeking employees with transportation operations experience who desire promotion to Manager Yard Operations.

Successful candidates enter a 12 week training program as Transportation Trainees. Upon program completion, successful trainees will be placed into an entry-level field transportation management (non-agreement) position.

Transportation trainees will be expected to "be away from home" during the training period, with the limited ability for return home trips. Additionally, in all likelihood, placement after training will require relocation from the employee's current work location, as placement will be determined by available vacancies.

Tentative class start dates is: January 2011. Your application will remain under consideration throughout this period. Thereafter, a new application will need to be submitted.

Accountabilities:
  • This twelve week program prepares employees to assume entry level field transportation management positions. Training covers leadership, safety management, business decision-making, and technical skills

  • Upon successfully completing the 12 week training program individuals will be assigned to either an MYO or MOP position based on their qualifications, career interests, location preferences, and available vacancies. Location can not be guaranteed, and as a result, candidates who enter this program must be willing to relocate. Assignments may not be made until training is complete.

  • Ensure employee safety (manage the safety plan)

  • Supervise work crews (lead and manage employees in the execution of the transportation plan)

  • Manage on-time transportation operations

  • Manage the terminal transportation plan to ensure that all business objectives are met

  • Manage train service expenses within assigned budgetary limits

  • Execute action plans to achieve cost of quality business objectives

  • Coordinate and plan daily activities with centralized functional areas

  • Monitor work force levels to ensure all jobs are covered

  • Implement corrective action plans as necessary

  • Communicate company policies and directives to terminal employees

  • Coach and develop employees.

Required Education, Training, Experience or Skills:
  • 3 year(s) experience / knowledge in transportation field operations (for example,TE&Y employee, Yardmaster, Train Dispatcher, etc) or 1 year experience as a nonagreement/management employee

Preferred Education, Training, Experience or Skills:
  • A Bachelor Degree

  • Certified as a Locomotive Engineer - Class 1

Work Conditions:
  • Have not received formal discipline in past two years.

  • Must be willing to work away from home during the training period.

  • Must have an EQMS score of at least 950. (if applicable)

  • Must be willing to relocate.

  • Willing to work outdoors regardless of weather conditions.
