Yardmaster Trainee

Work Location: Fort Worth, TX

Salary: $4913 per month

Basic Purpose of Job:

The objectives of the job are to (1) be responsible for and directly supervise yard crews, clerks and all other employees working in the yard; (2) see that these employees work in a safe, efficient, and economical manner, according to the rules, regulations and instructions of the railroad; and (3) ensure the safe, prompt and regular movement of cars, especially the proper makeup of trains and their movement into and out of the yard.

Accountabilities:
  • ENSURE SAFETY AND SECURITY. Be responsible for the safety and security of the yard and its inhabitants; be familiar with emergency response procedures; coordinate responses to unplanned events and emergency situations.

  • ACCOMPLISH TERMINAL PRODUCTION GOALS. Ensure goals are met (i.e., number of trains moved in and out of yard, etc.) and implement daily yard plan; monitor actual train movements against time schedules and limits.

  • COMMUNICATE INFORMATION, INSTRUCTIONS, AND REQUIREMENTS TO TRAIN CREWS AND OTHER PERSONNEL. Communicate clearly by telephone, radio and in person with train and yard crews, dispatchers, CMS, Mechanical and Engineering departments, NCSC and other personnel regarding train and freight car movements and instructions; review all train orders and authorities with relieving yardmasters; coordinate corrective responses to unplanned events; communicate effectively with external customers.

  • PERFORM ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES. Apply industry and company requirements concerning hours of service, hazardous materials, etc.; support FRA and operating rules compliance; document train and freight car movements within the yard; report alleged violations of rules; provide job briefings before each shift and throughout the day as needed; enter terminal data into computer for reporting; instruct employees in other crafts about necessary work that needs to be completed.

Required Education, Training, Experience or Skills:
  • Applicants must have a valid driver's license or be able to obtain one in a reasonable amount of time.

  • Applicants must be computer literate and have basic keyboarding skills.

  • Applicants must have the ability to perform basic arithmetic operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and conversion of fractions into decimals and decimals into fractions to solve practical problems. In addition, applicants must be able to extract relevant information from tables, charts, graphs, and text.

  • Must be able to read and interpret operating and safety rules, bulletins, special instructions, federal regulatory documents and other printed materials; read and interpret information displayed on computer monitors and printouts.

  • Must be able to clearly communicate in English information and instructions over the telephone, radio, or in person to train and yard crews, dispatchers, etc.; receive and understand communications from the field; use questioning to elicit pertinent information.

  • Applicants must have good prioritization and organization skills; ability to multi-task.

  • Must be able to make quick and accurate visual inspections at near and far distances; perceive visual detail in a complex, distracting visual background; check information in text or computer displays for accuracy and completeness.

Preferred Education, Training, Experience or Skills:
  • College degree

  • Railroad experience

  • Fluent in Spanish (in some locations)

  • High School Diploma or GED

  • Logistics experience

  • Supervisory experience

  • Successful completion of a railroad-focused program or course

Union:
  • Union membership initiation fee and monthly dues or assessments are required as per the collective bargaining agreement.

  • The probationary period may range from 60-90 days from the date of seniority, which is governed by the collective bargaining agreement based on the territory.

Work Conditions:
    • Must be willing to work in an enclosed space for entire shift; willing to work with almost constant multiple demands; willing to continuously stay in work station except for brief breaks that traffic levels allow; willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions as necessary. In some locations, may work in a tower accessible only by stairs.
    • Must be willing to work nonstandard hours, which may include variable shifts, night shifts, weekends, and holidays. Willing to work on call.
