IT Dept -- Jr Proj Engineer-Sr. Project Engr - Network Operations

Basic Purpose of Job:
This position is a technical position in the IT Department as part of the Career Path Process. The technical career path is for employees interested in an individual contributor role, who want to work with other team members to ensure a project's success. The main elements of the technical path include: 1) No direct reports, 2) Heavy technical skills, 3) Heavy teamwork, 4) Heavy client/customer contact, 5) Heavy daily planning and execution, 6) Creativity and 7) Participation in interviewing process.
Position will support the Network Operations Control (NOC) group within the IT Department.
Position reports to Dennis Shavlik and will be filled at a Band A or B level (Junior Project Engineer, Associate Project Engineer, Project Engineer or Sr. Project Engineer) depending upon the successful candidate's skill set and experience.
Position requires personnel to work shift work (first, second and third shift) and includes weekends and holidays.
Position resides in the Data Center Operations area. Responsibilities include:
Provide the daily operational support and monitoring of Union Pacific Railroad's communications environment.
Utilize and maintain enterprise management tools for proactive monitoring IP and communication infrastructure resources.
Provide second level support to internal and external customers, utilizing various software applications for network and resource monitoring.
Proactively monitor and address all AEI site alarms.
Manage major failures to the telecommunications network and CTC code lines.
Interface with support groups, including external vendors, Telecom field support and engineering personnel.
Manage multiple projects simultaneously.
Desired Technical Experience:
Core communications skills:
Routers and switches with emphasis on the Cisco product.
Lan/Wan networking and associated equipment.
Digital and Analog transmission systems.
Telephony circuits including VOIP.
Protocol analysis.
Due to training requirements, it is anticipated successful candidates would remain in the Data Center Operations area a minimum of two years.
