Basic Purpose of Job:

Union Pacific Railroad has several year-round internship opportunities available for interested students who would like to work 15-20 hours per week in the Information Technologies Department in Omaha, Nebraska.

Internship opportunities exist in all areas of the IT Department, including applications development, IS security, systems engineering, IT operations, and Telecommunications.

Students must be currently enrolled in a bachelor degree program in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, MIS or related IT field.

Students must have completed two semesters of college with at least one semester remaining before graduation. Sophomore status or above is desired.

Current or future employment-based sponsorship is not provided.

Required Skills include:
Advanced computer skills with knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite and Internet Navigation. Strong oral and written communication skills. Strong problem solving/analytical abilities.

Desired coursework includes one or more of the following areas: Data Structures, Database, Internet Development (HTML, Java), Object Oriented Programming, Hardware/Network, Complex Planning and Scheduling, Optimization, Simulations, SAP

Internships provide an opportunity to work up to 40 hours during the summer while school is not in session, and then return to reduced hours during the semester.

Accountabilities:
  • Internships include opportunities in the following areas: client/server, Web and e-business applications development, SAP, database management, data warehousing, data security, workstation and server operating systems, PC support, etc. Students may be provided an opportunity to rotate into various areas of the department to gain broader exposure to a variety of environments.

Preferred Education, Training, Experience or Skills:
  • College credits equivalent to one year towards an undergraduate degree (sophomore status or above) and working towards a Bachelors Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, MIS or related IT field

  • 1 year(s) experience / knowledge in computer applications including Microsoft Suite of Products and Internet Navigation Experience

  • Basic analytical and problem-solving skills

  • Basic communication skills
