Boilermakers perform inspections, fabricate, assemble, modify and perform maintenance and repairs on locomotive boilers in full compliance with FRA and Union Pacific requirements. Position requires travel with the steam locomotives on all trips to perform maintenance and servicing. Must be able to locate and isolate mechanical problems, identify possible corrective actions and select appropriate action. Must be able to make quick visual inspections and comparisons at near distances to determine if objects meet specifications. Must be able to detect and interpret visual color signals and displays and detect unusual sounds and smells during inspection tests. this is accomplished through the use of shop machines, hand tools, power tools, cutting torches, welding equipment and mechanical assistance devices. Work is of a physical nature and requires kneeling, bending, and/or standing at heights up to 12 feet above ground level. Boilermakers must be able to exert physical strength sufficient to lift, carry, push or pull objects weighing from 25-50 pounds, climb stairs, ladders and balance while working on equipment. good depth perception and ability to judge speed and distance of locomotives being moved in the service are required.

Fabricate and assemble parts and components using welding, riveting, bolting, soldering and grinding.

Fabricate locomotive and other parts such as fronts, doors running boards, truck frames, derricks and booms.

Work with shop machines, tools, vehicles and equipment (including drill and punch presses, bench lathes, drills, impact wrenches, power saws, grinders, acetylene torches, electric and gas welding equipment.

Remove and install boiler tubes, flues, repair super heater units, remove and install welded and/or threaded stay bolts, studs, plugs, etc.
|

Safety and effectively operate the following: acetylene torches, non=power tools (pliers, wrenches, and hammers); power tools (drills, power saws, grinders); electric and gas welding equipment.

Applicants must be a qualified welder under AWS, AME Section 0, and MBIC appendix 3 codes. Full familiarity with all applicable FRA codes , including but not limited to, CFR 49 Part 230 Inspection/Repair Requirements for Steam-Powered Locomotives.

Applicants must have verifiable experience in and able to demonstrate proficiency in welding pressure vessels up to 3" wall thickness; welding all types of metals including iron, steel, stainless steel and aluminum' must have verifiable experience and be able to demonstrate proficiency in welding techniques including gas, brazing, SMAW, MIG and TIG.

Applicants must have experience in removing and installing boiler tubes and flues, repairing super heater units, removing and installing welded and/or threaded stay bolts, studs, plugs, etc.

Boilermakers must wear personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, safety boots, hard hats, and hearing protection where the company requires.
