Signal Maintainer

Salary: $28.01 per hour

Basic Purpose of Job:

Responsible for performing FRA and UPRR required signal system testing. They lead in the installation, repair, troubleshooting, and maintenance of various railroad signals and grade crossing warning devices. Physical duties require the ability to do the following: make quick and accurate movements; maintain exact and steady arm/hand positioning movements; perform a rapid, horizontal hand torque action; lift/carry and push/pull objects weighing 25 lbs. (frequently), 50 lbs. (occasionally) and 75 lbs. (infrequently); climb poles, ladders and large structures and maintain balance while working on equipment (occasionally); dig holes and trenches; set poles; sweep between rails and switches; lift and maneuver heavy objects overhead (infrequently); walk for varied distances on uneven terrain (typically 3-5 miles per week); maintain muscular exertion over time; perform occasional overhead work for short periods of time; perform occasional bending, stooping and kneeling; and stand for more than half of work day with break periods.

Accountabilities:
  • Inspect signal circuitry, equipment, and systems for problems and defects.

  • Test signal circuitry, equipment, and systems for FRA reporting.

  • Troubleshoot malfunctions.

  • Build and dismantle signal crossing warning device equipment.

  • Maintain, repair, and replace signal communication circuitry, systems, and components.

  • Work with machines, tools, vehicles, and equipment.

  • Operate company vehicles and drive throughout geographic territory.

  • Plan, organize, and track information and activities.

  • Construct and install.

  • Communicate with others.

  • Direct the work of others.

  • Work with information in print or on a computer.

  • Understand and follow company and industry safety rules, practices, and procedures.

Required Education, Training, Experience or Skills:
  • Applicants must be 18 years of age or older.

  • Applicants must have a valid driver's license or be able to obtain one in a reasonable amount of time.

  • Applicants must be computer literate and have basic keyboarding skills.

  • Applicants receiving a conditional job offer must pass a color vision assessment to ensure that they are able to perform the essential functions of the job by adequately discerning different colors.

  • Applicants must have the ability to effectively and accurately understand, interpret, reference, evaluate, organize, and record non-technical and technical information.

  • Applicants must be able and willing to understand and apply safety rules, practice safe work habits, identify safety risks, and avoid potentially risky behaviors and situations.

  • Applicants must have the ability to communicate with others.

Preferred Education, Training, Experience or Skills:
  • Previous construction experience and/or experience operating construction equipment.

  • A certificate in electricity or electronics or equivalent education.

  • Electronic/electrical background or education.

  • Previous railroad experience in signaling.

  • Candidates who are able to demonstrate knowledge in the electrical field by providing a work history including contacts and documentation of apprentice or journeyman training and/or experience.

Union:
  • Brotherhood Railway Signalmen.

  • The probationary period is 90 calendar days.

  • Union membership initiation fee and monthly dues or assessments are required as per the collective bargaining agreement.

Work Conditions:
  • Outside work is required regardless of weather conditions.

  • Must wear personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, safety boots, hard hats, and hearing protection where the company requires. They will be working:

    • Outside with exposure to all weather conditions.
    • Occasionally at heights of 20 feet or more above the ground.
    • With, on, and around moving or rotating heavy equipment.
    • Occasionally in confined spaces.
    • Independently.
    • Forty-hour workweeks that may include overtime. A day shift with some service outside of assigned hours including weekends and holidays. Shift work may exist at some locations. This position is subject to call for emergency service.
