Instructor - Transportation Training

Basic Purpose of Job:

Develop, deliver, and evaluate technical training for Train Service and/or Locomotive Engineer employees. Ensure technical training programs achieve 1) full compliance with regulatory (FRA, AAR, OSHA, etc.) and company mandated requirements and 2) produce competent, fully trained employees essential to support ongoing viability of railroad train service operations.
Present safety, technical, managerial, quality and/or service reliability training programs to both agreement and non-agreement transportation employees and external customers. Improve partner department capabilities to achieve key business objectives. Develop working relationship with service unit management, both local and away, to enhance understanding of partner department needs and linkages to applicable courseware. Be prepared to perform needs assessment with partner department and apply problem solving techniques to develop appropriate training solutions. Work within a team of professionals to create value for the partner department in the area of training, maintaining a high standard of quality while managing costs and efficiency. Maintain and improve subject matter expertise while addressing improvements relative to continuous revisions and updates in new technologies. Transfer knowledge and skills to new and current employees critical to the safety of the individual employee, the traveling public, and train operations across the entire railroad. Evaluate training effectiveness through on-the-job observation audits and training assessments. Accountable for management of time and personal spending in the process of meeting customer expectations. Based on the observations and assessments, propose improvements to processes and/or training strategies. Build a safety culture through complete understanding of and compliance with all company rules and instructions. Hold others accountable for their level of dedication and commitment to safety. Extensive travel required, typically 50% to 75% of time.

This position is available in the Technical Training organization of the Human Resources Department. The position will be located at Ft Worth, Texas. The position is a point of entry to the Technical Training career path which includes promotion opportunity to SR Instructor and Supervisor based upon achievement of professional development goals. Relocation benefits are not available. Thus, the hiring team prefers to source candidates from the immediate area or candidates who can relocate without relocation assistance.

Accountabilities:
  • Design, develop and deliver transportation technical training classes to enable the partner department to achieve key business objectives. Perform administrative duties related to that function such as scheduling and reporting.

  • Maintain course content accuracy and ensure alignment with current FRA and company rules and regulations. This accountability includes the ongoing maintenance and evaluation of several training programs. Maintain training documents (instructor and participant materials, laboratories, etc.) to support ongoing investigations, litigation, and company / regulatory mandated training requirements.

  • Perform evaluation audits / observations of trainees within assigned function and propose improvements to processes and/or training strategy. This training is critical to the safe running of railroad operations and lives of our employees. In addition, this training also targets effective use of company assets, and incorporates training concepts that have saved the company. Facilitate and document new hire formal classroom training, as well as, on the job training; providing documentation on trainees upon request of HR or Service Unit management.

  • Maintain and improve subject matter expertise and participate as team member both within functional area and cross-functionally. Partner departments rely on the technical training staff to clarify operating rules and company / FRA instructions and regulations.

  • Be actively involved in personal development to enhance subject matter expertise and instructional skills. Demonstrate leadership behaviors and professionalism.

  • Ensure that company values, goals and methodology of adult learning principles are adhered to throughout the training process. Comply with all HRD&T policies and procedures.

Required Education, Training, Experience or Skills:
  • A certified Locomotive Engineer - Class 1 with a currently effective license

Preferred Education, Training, Experience or Skills:
  • A Bachelor Degree

  • 2 year(s) experience / knowledge as a Certified Locomotive Engineer directly operating locomotives

  • 1 year(s) experience / knowledge in continuous improvement

  • 1 year(s) experience / knowledge developing and giving presentations

  • 1 year(s) experience / knowledge in project management

  • 4 year(s) experience / knowledge in Operating Rules

  • 4 year(s) experience / knowledge in train operations working TE&Y job assignments

  • Intermediate analytical and problem-solving skills

  • Certified as a Remote Control Operator
