Internships/Co-ops

Do you want a sneak preview of what it means to work for a railroad?  Are you intrigued by the possibility of charting your own career path? If so, we encourage you to apply for an internship with Union Pacific.

We provide college students with meaningful on-the-job experience through our internship and co-op programs. We are looking for ambitious undergraduate and graduate students to work in a variety of departments within the company:

Internship Opportunities

Our internships provide a mix of work experience, professional development opportunities and social networking. You will work on real and challenging projects, getting hands-on experience and supportive input along the way. Our internships are designed to introduce you to Union Pacific Railroad and the career opportunities we have to offer.

Our Intern Connection Program (ICP) is a structured program that enables interns to learn the business of Union Pacific Railroad while also making personal connections with other interns and UP employees.  Opportunities include:

Candidates typically are full-time students currently enrolled at a college or university, pursuing an undergraduate degree or a graduate degree in a field of study that support UP's business objectives. UP recruits candidates from college campuses, minority student referral programs, the Internet and employee referrals.

Both summer and year-round internship opportunities are available.  Summer interns work full-time from late May/early June through the beginning of August. Year-round interns work full-time during this period, but also work part-time during the college semesters.  We also offer a high school intern program to help students identify future areas of study.  Our high school internships are typically posted on our website in March or April timeframe.

Please note: To be considered for the college internship program, you must apply online via your campus career center or through our website.

New Internship Benefits - COMPANY PAID HOUSING AND TRANSPORTATION

We will now provide housing and transportation to interns who do not have access to housing in the Omaha area during their internship. This investment (valued at $2,000) demonstrates our commitment to connecting the best and brightest students with our career opportunities.

Located near the University of Nebraska-Omaha campus, Scott Court Housing is suite-style living in a dormitory atmosphere. This brand new housing development is within walking distance to Aksarben Village, a hip, new development with numerous dining and shopping options. Each suite has 4 private bedrooms, 2 full bathrooms and a furnished living area and full kitchen.

Union Pacific will also provide shuttle service between Scott Court and Union Pacific Center.

Co-Ops Opportunities

Our traditional co-op program hires college students who have a formal arrangement with their academic institution to alternate full-time work and college semesters. The student may alternate between work and study for two or more terms. Students sometimes may receive college credit for participating in these programs. This type of program is primarily offered by our Operating departments: engineering, mechanical and transportation.
