Mechanical Co-Op Education Program
Union Pacific offers work/study programs to selected college students. Our Mechanical Department's Co-op Education Program enables talented students to experience the work environment of a Fortune 200 company while continuing their education. Student's gain insight into the U.S. transportation industry while acquiring the work experience needed to make an informed career choice.
The Mechanical Department is responsible for supporting transportation operations by providing safe and reliable equipment. Our 8,000 employees maintain and repair a fleet of over 7,000 locomotives and 130,000 freight cars.
Major Functions in the Mechanical Department
- Operations - Oversee daily shop and run repair operations
- Scheduling/Planning - Provide problem diagnosis and advice regarding malfunctions and repairs as well as perform routing, follow-up, and trend analysis for in-service failures
- Engineering and Quality - Perform technical research and development to support the operations group.
- Headquarters Staff - Provide support in the areas of human resources, training, employee involvement, budget, systems and administrative services.
Co-op opportunities exist at our Omaha headquarters, Salt Lake City (Roper), Utah and North Little Rock, Arkansas shops. As Union Pacific depends heavily on suppliers to develop new equipment designs, our Co-ops are challenged with analytical, operational and program management assignments. Design engineering opportunities are limited.
General Qualifications
- Enrolled in an accredited university
- Actively pursuing a degree in Transportation/Logistics or Mechanical, Industrial, Civil, Electrical or Environmental Engineering
- Junior or Senior status at the time of employment having completed basic engineering courses
- Minimum 2.5 GPA
Co-ops in the Mechanical Department will earn $3100.00 per month.
