Operations

Overview

In Operations, you'll do work you couldn't do anywhere else – real railroad work. And you'll quickly have opportunities to take charge.

You'll become a leader in one of three areas:

Mechanical –  where we keep 8,000 locomotives and 107,000 freight cars in top condition

Engineering – where we build and maintain tracks, bridges, buildings, signals and communications devices

Transportation – where we keep 3,000 trains safely and efficiently moving on the rails every day

Requirements

We're looking for people who graduated from college with grade point averages of 2.5 or above, with degrees in engineering, transportation or business. We need critical thinkers with strong analytical and communication skills. And we need people who are looking for something more intense than a typical 8 to 5, Monday through Friday job. You’ll be doing important, rewarding work that will often call for long hours and unusual shifts, including weekends.

Potential Career Path

Training

You'll start in our Operations Management Training, a 6- to 12-month training program, where you'll learn about Union Pacific’s heritage and how the railroad operates.

Our employees are constantly challenged to learn new technology and new ways of thinking. Our Educational Assistance Program encourages full-time regular staff employees to take job-related courses during their non-work hours at accredited schools, colleges and universities. The program reimburses employees for 85 percent of tuition up to $3,500 a year.

Union Pacific also provides internal training programs and encourages employees to take advantage of these programs.
