Apprentice Freight Car Repairer
America's economy depends on the safe transport of our customers' goods. In this entry-level position, you'll help keep Union Pacific's 108,000 freight cars in good working order. It's a big job: If you lined our fleet of freight cars from end to end, they’d stretch 1,500 miles – from Omaha to Los Angeles.
You'll inspect, repair and maintain freight cars under the guidance of a journeyperson. You'll work with hand and power tools, cutting torches and welding equipment. You'll make pre-trip inspections, keeping an eye on freight, ensuring clearance and compliance and that loads haven’t shifted. You’ll keep the cars cleaned and painted.
This is physical outdoor work involving kneeling, bending and stooping.
You must be at least 18 years old. You must speak and read English because you'll be asked to follow government regulations and instructions. You must know how to operate various hand and power tools, including cutting torches and welding equipment. You'll have to pass a Skilled-Craft Battery test (see sample) to be considered for an interview. You must have the stamina for heavy, physical labor.
If You Are Offered a Job
We will conduct a thorough background investigation. This will include your Social Security number, criminal and drug history, past employment, education, professional licenses and certifications, military history, driving record, credit history and any other information relevant to the job.
You must complete a medical history questionnaire, a urine drug test and a medical screening to judge whether you are able to perform the essential tasks of the position.
You must also be able to prove that you are a U.S. citizen or that you are authorized to work in the United States.
As a newly hired Apprentice Freight Car Repairer, you can expect to earn about $17.90 an hour, with actual pay depending on Union-negotiated agreements.
